Location of Bikaner:

The District of Bikaner is situated in Rajasthan State of Northwestern India. It is 27244 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Sri Ganganagar on the North, District Hanumangarh in the Northeast, District Churu on the East, District Nagaur on the South and Southeast, District Jodhpur on the South, District Jaisalmer on the Southwest and Pakistan on the Northwest. The City of Bikaner is the headquarter of this District.

This District was founded in 1488 A.D. by a Rajput Prince Rao Bika Ji son of Rao Jodha Ji (the founder of Jodhpur) of Marwar. Earlier it was known as ‘Jungladesh’, its founder changed its name to Bikaner after himself. The old part of Bikaner city is surrounded by a seven Km long embattled stone wall that is 15–30 feet high and has five ornamental gates. The City is famous for Sweets like Rasgullas and Snacks like Bhujias and Papads. It has emerged as a big woolen production centre and is known for Woolen Shawls, Carpets, Blankets etc. It is also known for Camel Research Farm.

Tehsils – Bikaner, Kolayat, Nokha, Loonkaransar, Khajuwala, Chhattargarh, Poogal, Dungargarh

Sub-Tehsil – Bajju

Climate of Bikaner:

This District lies in the Great Indian Desert or Thar Desert and its climate is characterised by extreme variations in temperature with very hot Summers and very cold Winters. This District experiences four main Seasons –

  • Summer – From March to June when maximum temperature rises to 50oC, while minimum temperature remains around 36oC.
  • Monsoon – From July to September with average annual rainfall of 350 mm and temperature remaining around 31oC.
  • Post Monsoon – From September to Mid-November with temperature of around 28oC.
  • Winters – From Mid November to February when minimum temperature dips to freezing point and average Day temperature remains around 20oC.
