Location of Pratapgarh:

The District of Pratapgarh is situated in Rajasthan State of Northwestern India. It is 4117.36 Sq. km. in area. It is surrounded by District Chittorgarh on the North and Northwest, District Banswara on the South and Southwest, District Udaipur on the West, District Neemuch of Madhya Pradesh State on the Northeast, District Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh State on the Southeast, District Ratlam of Madhya Pradesh State on the South. The City of Pratapgarh is the headquarter of this District.

Maharana Kumbha was the ruler of Chittorgarh in the 14th Century. He expelled his younger brother Kshemkarn out of his territory. Kshemkarn’s family took refuge in the Aravali ranges in South Rajasthan. His son Rajkumar Surajmal conquered the area of Devgarh and became the ruler of Devgarh. Rajkumar Pratap Singh, a descendant of Raja Surajmal built a new town near Devgarh in 1698 and named it as Pratapgarh.

This District was created out of Chittorgarh, Banswara and Udaipur Districts of Rajasthan on 26 January, 2008. It is the second highest place in Rajasthan after Mount Abu with an average elevation of 1610 feet. It is famous for pure gold and glass-inlay handmade unique jewelry called ‘Thewa’.

This District has been divided into 5 Tehsils –

Tehsils – Arnod, Chhoti Sadari, Dhariawad, Peepalkhoont, Pratapgarh


Climate of Pratapgarh:

The Climate of this District is Sub-tropical Sub-humid with mild Winter and moderate Summer with high humidity during the months of July-September. It experiences four main Seasons –

  • Summer – From April to June when maximum temperature rises to 40oC, while average temperature remains around 30oC.
  • Monsoon – From July to Mid-September with average annual rainfall of 753 mm and temperature around 28oC and high humidity.
  • Post Monsoon – From Mid-September to November when average temperature remains around 25oC.
  • Winters – From December to March when minimum temperature falls to around 12oC, while average Day temperature remains around 20oC.
