Location of Devi Kund:

This is the royal crematorium of the rulers of the erstwhile Bikaner State, located on the banks of a water reservoir 8 Km East of Bikaner City, District Bikaner, Rajasthan.

History & Architecture of Devi Kund:

This Architectural Marvel is famous for the Rajputana style of architecture. It has a number of royal cenotaphs or chhatries built in the memory of Rathore rulers and their important family members. The cenotaphs have been built at the place where the rulers were cremated according to Hindu rituals and each cenotaph bears the name of the ruler. These cenotaphs are white structures having canopies. The cenotaphs of the royal wives have the footprints bearing henna patterns, while the cenotaphs of the children are small, in the shape of white cubes and are without canopies. Many cenotaphs are ornamented with royal portraits, while some bear stone inscriptions.

The cenotaphs of 22 Saties (women who burnt themselves alive upon the death of their husbands) of royal family prior to Maharaja Rao Gaj Singh (the ruler of Bikaner between 1746-1787 A.D.) and a cenotaph of a ruler who committed Sati are also located here. The chhatri of Maharaja Rao Surat Singh (1787-1828 A.D.) is most impressively designed, is entirely made of white marble and has splendid Rajput paintings on its ceiling.
