Location of Jaisalmer:

The District of Jaisalmer is situated in Rajasthan State of Northwestern India. It is 38401 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Barmer on the South, District Jodhpur on the East, District Bikaner on the Northeast and Pakistan on the North and West. The City of Jaisalmer is the headquarter of this District.

The Jaisalmer Fort and City was founded in 1156 A.D. by Maharawal Jaisal, a Rajput King when he shifted his Capital from Ludharva to this City and is named after him. This City is also called as the ‘Golden City of India’, due to the Yellow colour of the sand which gives a Golden tinge to the City and also because the whole City is constructed with Yellow Stone.

This District has been divided into 3 Tehsils :

Tehsils – Jaisalmer, Pokaran, Fatehgarh

Climate of Jaisalmer:

This District is located in the heart of the Great Indian Desert or Thar Desert, so its Climate is quite dry. The Summers are very hot, Winters very cold and very less rainfall.

This District experiences four main Seasons –

  • Summer – From March to June when maximum temperature rises to 49oC, while the average temperature remains around 40oC.
  • Monsoon – From July to Mid-September with average annual rainfall of 164 mm, Sandstorms and temperature around 38oC.
  • Post Monsoon – From Mid-September to October end with average temperature of 30oC.
  • Winters – From November to February when minimum temperature falls to around 1oC, while the average Day temperature remains around 20oC.
