Location of Sri Ganganagar:

The District of Sri Ganganagar is situated in Rajasthan State of Northwestern India. It is 7984 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Bikaner on the South, District Hanumangarh on the East, State of Punjab on the Northeast and Pakistan on the West and Northwest. The City of Sri Ganganagar is the headquarter of this District.

This District has been named after Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. Earlier it was a part of the Bikaner State and was mostly uninhabited region. Due to the efforts of Maharaja Ganga Singh, who visualised and built Gang Canal after the Indian famine of 1899-1900, the waters of Sutlej River were brought into the region through 89-mile long Gang Canal on 26 October, 1927. It was this Canal which turned the area into ‘The Food Basket of Rajasthan’. The City of Sri Ganganagar is one of the well planned cities of India and it is said to be influenced by the town planning of Paris.

This District has been divided into 9 Tehsils –

Suratgarh, Anoopgarh, Gharsana, Sri Ganganagar, Padampur, Sri Karanpur, Sadulshahr, Raisinghnagar, Shri Vijaynagar


Climate of Sri Ganganagar:

The Climate of this District is very dry with large variations in temperature. The Summers are very hot and winters are very cold. This District experiences four main Seasons –

  • Summer – From March to June when maximum temperature rises to 50oC, while average temperature remains around 40oC. The Month of June is the hottest one.
  • Monsoon – From July to Mid-September with average annual rainfall of 200 mm and temperature around 35oC.
  • Post Monsoon – From Mid-September to October end when average temperature remains around 30oC.
  • Winters – From November to February when minimum temperature falls to around 0oC, while average Day temperature remains around 20oC. The Month of January is the coldest one.
