Location of Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum:

This Museum is located in the Civil Lines area of Bikaner City, District Bikaner, Rajasthan.

History of Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum:

It was established in 1937 A.D. by Lord Linlithgow, the then Governor General of India, near Lallgarh Palace on the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Maharaja Sir Rao Ganga Singh’s rule. It was shifted to its present location in 1954 A.D. and now is being managed by the Government of Rajasthan.

The Museum displays splendid master pieces of Harappan civilization, Gupta and Kushan era and sculptures of the late classical time. It has one of the richest collection of Terracotta ware in India. These belong to the early Gupta period and were discovered in 1017 A.D. by Dr. L. P. Tessitori from the ancient mounds of Rang Mahal, Badopal, Pir Sultan-Ki-Theri located between Suratgarh and Hanumangarh of the old Bikaner State. The existence of these mounds can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization.

It has an exquisite collection of Rajasthani miniature paintings of almost all the sub-schools of Rajasthan such as Bikaner, Bundi, Mewar, Jaipur, Jodhpur etc.

The sculptures displayed here are : A 4.8 feet high marble sculpture of Jain Saraswati belonging to 11th-12th Century A.D. It is a wonderful example of the medieval Indian sculpture discovered from village Pallu of Sri Ganganagar District. A beautiful one foot high bronze image of a Nartaki (a dancer) belonging to 10th-11th Century A.D. It was discovered from large sand dune of village Amarsar in Tehsil Sujangarh of District Churu.

The wood and stone carvings displayed here are : A teak wood table, a wooden casket, a model of the Gajner Palace, a typical ‘Ikka’ (horse drawn cart) and a chariot.

The Museum has a beautiful collection of lacquer works – a craft special to Bikaner entirely done by the artisans, called Ustas or Ustaads (Masters), on wood, metal, glass, stone, leather and ostrich egg shells.

The Museum also has a collection of various Farmans (royal orders), bearing original Imperial seals, issued by the Mughal Emperors – Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb and Shah Alam. A Furgal (Silk Robe) of Emperor Jahangir belonging to 1596 A.D. which was presented to Rao Rai Singh by the Emperor is also preserved here.

The entire collection of the Museum includes 71 Stone Sculptures, 10 inscriptions, 192 Miniature Paintings, 124 Terracottas, 27 Metallic Objects, 574 Arms, 22241 Coins and 1108 Objects of local Art, Craft and Textiles.

The Museum remains open on all days except Fridays and Gazetted Holidays from 10.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M.
