Location of Gajner Palace:
This is the Summer resort of the erstwhile rulers of Bikaner located at a distance of 30 Km from Bikaner City in town Gajner of Tehsil Kolayat, District Bikaner, Rajasthan.
History of Gajner Palace:
It was built by General Narendra Maharaja Sir Rao Ganga Singh (the ruler of Bikaner between 1887-1943 A.D.) and is commonly described as ‘An Incomparable Jewel in the Thar Desert’. It is located on the banks of a beautiful lake, adjoining Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary. It was used by Maharajas, Viceroys and other royal dignitaries as a hunting lodge and for entertainment.
Architecture of Gajner Palace:
It is spread over an area of 6000 acres and is built of red sandstone. It is known for its architectural grandeur and panoramic landscape. It has intricately carved columns and screens, sculpted pillars and lavish interiors adorned with miniature paintings. The palace Complex also has the remains of a historic railway station which was located on a railway line which once connected this resort to Bikaner Palace. It has been divided into four distinctive wings – Dungar Niwas where the British dignitaries once stayed during their trips to the palace, Gulab Niwas was once used by the distinguished railway officers, Champa Niwas having a beautiful courtyard surrounded by rooms and Mandir Chowk is a part of the reception area and has an ancient Temple and an old Banyan tree.
A part of this majestic Palace has been converted into a Heritage Hotel.
