Location of Jodhpur:
The District of Jodhpur is situated in Rajasthan State of Northwestern India. It is 22850 Sq. Km. in area. It is surrounded by District Bikaner on the North, District Nagaur on the Northeast, District Pali on the South and Southeast, District Jaisalmer on the West, District Barmer on the Southwest. The City of Jodhpur is the headquarter of this District.
This District has a very rich and long history. The City of Mandore which is located at a distance of 9 Km North of the present Day Jodhpur City was the Capital of Pratiharas who ruled the area for seven Centuries. The Pratiharas were ousted in 1381 by Rao Chanda, a Rathore clan ruler. The City of Jodhpur was founded in 1489 by Rao Jodha, a descendant of Rao Chanda. The foundation stone of the present Day Jodhpur was laid by Sir Pratap Singh, a Rathore clan ruler and it was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh who ruled over the area until India’s independence in 1947. It was merged into Rajasthan State in 1949. The Jodhpur City is also known as ‘Sun City’ for the Rathore clan rulers who claim themselves to be descendants of Lord Rama, the Suryavanshi King of Ayodhaya in ‘Ramayana Period’.
This District has been divided into 7 Tehsils and 4 Sub-Tehsils –
Tehsils – Phalodi, Osian, Luni, Bilara, Shergarh, Jodhpur, Bhopalgarh
Sub-Tehsils – Bap, Jhanwar, Balesar, Tinwari
Climate of Jodhpur:
The Climate of this District is arid with extreme heat in Summer and very cold in Winter. This District experiences four main Seasons –
- Summer – From April to June when maximum temperature rises to 49, while average temperature remains around 40.
- Monsoon – From July to August with average annual rainfall of 302 mm, sandstorms and temperature around 38.
- Post Monsoon – From September to October end when average temperature remains around 30.
- Winter – From November to March when minimum temperature falls to around 1, while average temperature remains around 20.
