Location of Barmer Thar Festival:
This Festival is organised since 1986 by the District Administration of Barmer and the Department of Tourism at the Mahabar Sand Dunes which are located at a distance of 5 Km from Barmer City, District Barmer, Rajasthan.
History of Barmer Thar Festival:
It is organised to promote the archaeological, historical, religious and worth-seeing picturesque places of Barmer, to preserve the folk art and culture of Barmer, to display and promote the handicrafts industry of Barmer with a view to achieve all round industrial growth and to provide a unique place to Barmer District on the International map. Apart from the District Administration and the Department of Tourism, various Municipal Committees of the region, all the state, semi-government and the private organisations, the representatives of the people, reporters, Non-Government organisations and prominent Citizens participate to achieve the goal of all round development.
Attractions of Barmer Thar Festival:
During this three day Festival, the programs of folk music and folk dances of Rajasthan are organised, the handicrafts items are displayed, the beautifully ornamented Camels display various skills and interesting competitions like Mr. Thar and Mrs. Queen Thar are held. The Indian and foreign tourists enjoy the Camel riding.
On the first day of the Festival, the folk artists wearing the traditional clothes, the girls taking Mangal Kalash (the lucky or auspicious Pitcher), the ornamented Camels, the bands playing the folk music of Rajasthan, the folk singers singing songs sitting on the carts and the girl-dancers dancing on the way pass through the various roads of the City and receive warm welcome at various places. They finally reach Adarsh Stadium, where on the stage, competitions like Mr. Thar and Mrs. Thar are held and the person with the best style of tying Pagri and the person with the longest moustache are selected.
On the second day of the Festival, the holy hymns are sung in the evening representing the importance of the ancient, famous, historical and archaeologically important Temples of Kiradu.
On the third day of the Festival, the Camels, also called the aeroplanes of the Desert, display various skills. The youngmen play different kinds of thrilling games sitting on the backs of the Camels.
