Location of Baneshwar Temple:

This Temple is situated on a Delta formed by the confluence of river Soma and river Mahi at a distance of 50 Km from Dungarpur City, 7 Km from Sabla Bus Stand and 1.5 Km from Village Nawa Tapra in District Dungarpur, Rajasthan.

History of Baneshwar Temple:

This Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was constructed in 1793 A.D. by Aje and Vaje, the two disciples of a renowned Saint Mavji. This Temple has been built at the place where Mavji used to meditate.

Architecture of Baneshwar Temple:

Its architecture is influenced by the Mughal style and is adorned with various artistic patterns in pink, blue and green. It is a two-storeyed huge Temple having beautifully carved Pillars and the Gates.

A huge tribal Fair named ‘Baneshwar Fair’ is held here in the month of February from Magh Shukla Ekadashi to Magh Shukla Purnima. It is one of the most important and the Biggest Bhil Festival in Rajasthan. In the morning, the Shiva Linga is bathed and the Saffron is applied and an Aarti of burning incense is offered. In the evening, ash is applied to the Linga and an Aarti with a fine-wick lamp is offered. The wheat flour, pulses, rice, jaggery, ghee, salt, chilies, coconut and cash are offered by the devotees. The Bhils sing traditional songs sitting around the bonfire and play their musical instruments which include flute, dhol, thali, majira, dholak, mridang, tabla, harmonium and sarangi.

The other attractions of the Fair are the magic shows, folk dances and the swings for the children. The shops sell handicrafts and other fancy items.

A Temple known as Lakshmi-Narayan Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is situated nearby. Another Temple dedicated to Lord Brahma is also situated here. The Prayers are also offered five times a day in the Temples of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. The Krishna Raslila is organised at night in the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The devotees offer wheat flour, pulses, rice, jaggery, ghee, salt, chilies, coconut and cash.

The Temple remains open from 5.00 A.M. to 11.00 P.M. during the fair.
