Location of Ajabgarh Fort:

This Fort is located at a distance of 80 Km from Alwar City and 21 Km South of Thana Gazi in Village Ajabgarh, District Alwar, Rajasthan.

History of the Fort:

It was built in 1635 A.D. by Ajab Singh Rajawat, the grandson of Madho Singh, the founding ruler of Bhangarh. The Mughal Emperor Akbar is said to have stayed in Ajabgarh when he inaugurated Somsagar, a reservoir lake located in the hills behind Ajabgarh. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was entertained here at a chhatri erected especially for him by Ajab Singh when he was passing through this area to join his son, Aurangzeb, on a campaign against the Maharajah of Orchha. It was also the favourite hunting place for Maharaja Jai Singh of Alwar.

Architecture of the Fort:

Another attraction in this Village is an old Temple built in 1635 A.D. dedicated to Shri Raghunathji. It has a 24-pillared open courtyard and a marble facade. The front portion of this Temple is made of marble from Jhiri and Makrana. This Temple once housed a statue of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, ornamented with precious stones. It was unfortunately stolen. The Temple and the Fort are connected by an underground passage originally designed for use by the royal ladies so that they could enter the temple in complete privacy.
