Location of Pichhola Lake:

This Lake is located in the Southwestern part of the Udaipur City, District Udaipur, Rajasthan.

History of Pichhola Lake:

It is the oldest lake among all the lakes of Udaipur City and has derived its name from Villahe Pichholi which used to exist here. It was constructed in 1362 A.D. by a Nomadic Banjara during the reign of Maharana Lakha and was enlarged and renovated by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1559 A.D. when he founded the City of Udaipur.

Architecture of Pichhola Lake:

This lake is roughly triangular in shape, has a length of 3.6 Km in East-West direction and a width of 2.0 Km in North-South direction, while the maximum depth of the lake is 10.5 meters at the dam site. The main sources of water supply to this lake are the rivers Kotra (Sisarma) and Amarjok (Bujhada). It has a water spread area of 6.96 Sq. Km. when filled to its gross capacity of 13.676 million cubic meters and the net catchment area of this lake is 14610.63 hectares.

Attractions of Pichhola Lake:

This lake has two palaces named Jag Niwas Palace or Lake Palace and Jag Mandir Palace located on two large islands. Apart from the two large islands, there are several smaller ones, among them are Arsi Vilas, which is a haven for birds, and a platform known as Natni-Ka-Chabutra, which has its own legend.

The lake is surrounded by hills, gardens, havelis, Temples, Ghats and the City Palace all of which further enhance the beauty of this lake. The old Udaipur town with its ghats including the ceremonial Ghat where the Gangaur Festival is celebrated with fireworks and illuminations, is located at the Northern banks of the lake, while the massive City Palace is located on its eastern banks. Towards the South is a hill known as ‘Machhala Magra’ where part of the old City wall and the small fort of Eklinggarh can still be seen.
