Location of Fateh Sagar Lake:
This beautiful Pear-shaped Lake is located in the North of Lake Pichhola and Northwestern part of Udaipur City, District Udaipur, Rajasthan. It can be reached either by taking local buses, Tongas, auto-rickshaws or taxis from the City.
History of Fateh Sagar Lake:
It was constructed in 1678 A.D. by Maharana Jai Singh and was reconstructed in 1889 A.D. by Maharana Fateh Singh and is named after him.
Architecture of Fateh Sagar Lake:
It is overlooked by a number of hills on the three sides, has the Maharana Pratap Smarak on the top of the Pearl hill on the North side and has a 720 meters long and about 100 meters wide stone masonry dam on the Eastern side which has a spillway. This Lake is 2.6 Km in length (in North-South direction), 1.8 Km in width (in East-West direction), has a depth of 11.5 meters and covers total water spread area of nearly 4.0 Sq. Km. when filled to its capacity, normally during monsoons. It has the catchment area of 4325.35 hectares and the length of its shoreline is 8.5 Km. It has three inlet channels one from Pichola Lake, the second from Madar Lake and the third one from Badi Lake and one overflow channel which is opened during monsoons to discharge flood waters.
Attractions of Fateh Sagar Lake:
Three islands which are located in the lake further enhance the beauty of the lake. The largest island has been developed into Nehru Park having a boat- shaped Cafe and a small Zoo and is approachable by an enjoyable boat ride from the bottom of the Pearl Hill. The second island has a Public Park with beautiful water-jet fountains, while the third island has Udaipur Solar Observatory built in the year 1976.
The tourists can hire paddle boats or motor boats from the bottom of the Pearl Hill and enjoy a boat ride in the lake. The tourists can also enjoy the picturesque beauty of the lake and its surrounding Aravalli hills by covering the entire circumference of the lake while driving through Moti Magri Road, Fatah Sagar Drive, Rani Road and the winding road on the Eastern bank of the lake.
A Festival called the Hariyali Amavasya Mela (the green New Moon Fair) is organized on the banks of the lake, in the month of Shravan (August/September) every year.
