Location of Gagron Fort:

This magnificent, impregnable and ancient Fort is located at a distance of 12 Km from Jhalawar City, District Jhalawar, Rajasthan.

History & Architecture of the Fort:

Its foundation was laid in the 7th Century A.D. and it took another 7 Centuries to get completed. It is built on a low ridge at the confluence of the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers whose waters surround it on three sides. There used to be a deep moat on the fourth side, thus completing its defenses. It is surrounded by forests and has the Mukundarrah range of hills behind it. It stands witness to many battles fought for its possession. It is a beautiful example of both ‘Jal Durg’ or Water Fort (one which is protected by water) and ‘Vana Durg’ or Forest Fort (one which is protected by forests).

Though now in ruins, it still retains its Rajput aura with its barracks, magazine, palace and stable still present. The mausoleum of Mitthe Shah, a Sufi Saint, is situated outside the fort, which is the venue for an annual colorful fair held during the month of Muharram.
