This five-storied Haveli is located in a narrow lane near Jaisalmer Fort in Jaisalmer City, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
History of Patwon Ki Haveli:
It is a cluster of five Havelies constructed in the first half of the 19th Century A.D. by Seth Guman Chand Patwa, a famous trader who dealt in threads of Gold and Silver used in embroidering dresses, having business empire stretching from China to Egypt. He got these Havelis constructed for his 5 sons.
Architecture of Patwon Ki Haveli:
It is the largest, the most elaborate and fascinating mansion in Jaisalmer City. This architectural wonder entices the visitors with its hypnotic charm and eternal beauty.
These Havelies have been built in the traditional and unique Haveli style of Indian architecture with rooms set around a central courtyard. These are built of yellow sandstone, while the main gate is brown in color. These mansions have carved exteriors, about 60 balconies, beautifully carved lattice work, pillared halls, long corridors, beautifully painted ceilings and walls ornamented with stunning murals depicting the everyday court scenes, village scenes and other artistic concepts. The walls of one particular room are entirely covered with wonderful frescoes.
Now, one Haveli has been converted into a Museum and a shop that has a rich collection of antique furniture and decorative goods.
Two Havelies have been occupied by the Government and houses the offices of the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Art and Craft Department.
One Haveli runs the Basant Art Emporium, a shop selling brocades and embroidered textiles to the tourists. It provides a wonderful opportunity to the tourists to explore the rich traditional art and craft work of the local craftsmen.
One Haveli is privately owned and hence it is not open to the public.
