Location of Talchhapar Wildlife Sanctuary:
This heaven for animals is also known as Black Buck Sanctuary. It is located on the fringe of the Great Indian Desert (the Thar Desert), at a distance of 85 Km from Churu City on Nokha-Sujangarh State Highway in Tal Chhapar of Tehsil Sujangarh, District Churu, Rajasthan
History of Talchhapar Wildlife Sanctuary:
Earlier the area of this Sanctuary was used by the Maharajas of Bikaner for the hunting of Black Buck. It was declared a reserved wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1962.
Attractions of Talchhapar Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is spread over an area of 719 hectares. The Western side of the Sanctuary has some small hillocks and the watershed area is located between these hillocks and the Sanctuary. Most part of the Sanctuary is covered by grasses with very few trees of Khejri, Salvadora, Ber and Neem.
The Sanctuary houses Black Bucks in huge numbers and had about 1650 Black Bucks in the year 2005. Other wild animals like Spiky Tailed Lizard, Desert Fox, Chinkara, Wild Cats, Blue Bulls and Cobras can be easily seen in the Sanctuary. The watershed area of the Sanctuary is known as ‘Talchhapar Lake’ which attracts many migratory birds between months of September and March. The migratory birds seen here are Short-toed Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Harriers, Demoiselle Cranes, Indian Roller, Kestrels, Black Ibis, Kingfishers, different kinds of Shrikes, Sand Grouse, Partridge and Water Birds etc. The birds which are seen throughout the year are Blue Jay, Brown Dove, Crested lark, Ring Dove and Skylark. A special kind of grass known as ‘Mothia’ is found in this Sanctuary. The antelopes and Demoiselle Cranes feed on the seeds of this grass.
The visit of sanctuary has also been included in the itinerary of the Heritage on wheels, a luxury tourist train run by Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways as a joint venture.
