Location of Taragarh Fort Bundi:
This massive Fort is located at a distance of 39 Km Northwest of Kota City towards the Northern part of the Bundi City, District Bundi, Rajasthan.
History of Taragarh Fort Bundi:
The Fort is located on the top of a 1426 feet high thickly wooded hill and is built of stone. It was constructed by Rao Raja Ber Singh in the year 1354 A.D.
Architecture of Taragarh Fort Bundi:
Its design is based on pure Rajput style of architecture with very little Mughal influence. The marvellous architecture of the fort makes it one of the most sought after tourist spots not only in Bundi, but also in Rajasthan. It is reached by a steep road leading up the hillside to its huge gateway where statues of elephants greet the visitors. The Fort has, in fact, three entrances known as Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi Ki Phatak.
The most unique feature of the Fort are the tunnels crisscrossing the entire hillside which were used by the royal persons to flee in case of imminent danger to their lives from enemies. However, due to lack of proper maps these tunnels are now inaccessible.
The Fort has massive bastions out of which a 16th Century built bastion known as Bhim Burj is the largest one. It is located at the centre of the Fort on the top of which the second largest Cannon of medieval India named ‘Garbha Gunjam’ or ‘Thunder from the Womb’ is mounted.
A small palace named Rani Mahal built for the wives of the rulers is located within the Fort Complex. It once had spectacular murals and stained glass windows which have now lost their shine.
Four big water reservoirs carved out of solid rock are located inside the ramparts of the Fort. These were constructed to store and meet the demand of water inside the Fort during times of crisis.
One can also have a panoramic view of the City and the surrounding Countryside from the top of the Fort, especially during sunset.
