Location of Tijara Fort-Palace:

This Fort is located at a distance of 55 Km Northeast of Alwar city on the top of a hill in town Tijara, District Alwar, Rajasthan.

History of Tijara Fort-Palace:

In the year 1815 A.D., after the death of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh of Alwar State, it was divided into two parts. Two-third of the territory with Capital at Alwar City was awarded to his nephew Maharaja Viney Singh (1815-1857 A.D.), while the remaining one-third of the territory consisting of the Parganas of Tijara, Kishangarh, Mandhan, Karnikot and Mundawar with its capital at Tijara was awarded to his son Maharaja Balwant Singh.

The construction of this Fort was started in 1836 A.D. by Maharaja Balwant Singh for which famous architects from Kabul and Delhi were engaged. But because of the premature death of Maharaja Balwant Singh in 1846 A.D., probably from murder, the construction remained incomplete. All the wealth, weapons and assets at Tijara were transferred back to the Alwar State after the death of Maharaja Balwant Singh. His famous ‘Indra Viman’ chariot, which used to be drawn by four elephants during the Maharaja’s procession is now being used during the fair of Jagdishji at Alwar and is drawn by a tractor rather than elephants.

Architecture of Tijara Fort-Palace:

Its design is a fine blend of the Rajput and the Afghan styles of architecture with some Colonial influence. There was no road at that time to bring construction material to this hill. The huge double pillars of the Rani Mahal and the Mardana Mahal were perhaps carried uphill by the elephants.

Visiting Hours:

Now, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation has leased out this Fort for 60 years to the Neemrana Group of Hotels for restoration and conversion into a Heritage Hotel.
