Location of Sariska National Park:
This National Park is located at a distance of 42 Km from Alwar City nestled in the Aravalli hills, District Alwar, Rajasthan.
History of Sariska National Park:
Prior to India’s independence in 1947, the forests within the reserve were a part of the princely state of Alwar and were used for hunting by the rulers of Alwar. In the year 1955, the area was declared a Wildlife Reserve which was upgraded to a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1958. Again in the year 1982, a notification was issued to convert the Wildlife Sanctuary into a National Park.
Architecture of Sariska National Park:
It is spread over an area of 866 Sq. Km. and has rocky landscape with wide valleys. It is divided into the grasslands, tropical dry deciduous forests and tropical thorny forests. Its about 90% area is covered with Dhok trees which is a habitat to various wildlife species. Besides Dhok tress other trees found here are Acacia Catechu, Bamboo, Boswellia serreta, Butea monosperma, Commiphora wightii, Emblica officinalis, Lannea coromandelica, Sterculia urens, Terminalia arjuna, Terminalia bellerica and Zizyphus spp. An estimated 100 sq. km. of the Reserve is infested with Prosopis Juliflora.
The main Species of animals found here are Tiger, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Blue Bull, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Wild Boar, Chinkara, Jackal, Hyena, Wild Dog, Four-horned Antelope, Civet, Palm Civet, Ratel, Rusted spotted Cat, Caracal etc. It is home to India’s largest population of peafowl, and is habitat to Bush Quail, Grey Partridge, Sand Grouse, Golden-backed Woodpeckers, Tree Pie, the Great Indian Horned Owl, Crested Serpent Eagles etc. Also the Siliserh Lake on the edge of the park provides habitat to a large number of Crocodiles and a large population of Rhesus Monkeys is found around Talvriksh.
An ancient Kankwari Fort is located at the center of the National Park which provides a breathtaking view of the surroundings and the wildlife.
It also houses the ancient Temple town of Neelkanth which is located in a high valley, surrounded on all sides by mountains. This town has the ruins of more than 80 beautifully carved temples dating back to the 6th century A.D. Its most famous Temple is the Neelkanth Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It also has the remains of a 7th century A.D. Jain Temple of Naugaza having a huge 25 feet high pink sandstone statue of Lord Parshavanath Ji, the 23rd Jain Tirthankar. These Temples are contemporary of the world famous Khajuraho Temples.
