Location of Desert National Park:

This is One of the largest National Parks in India and is located close to the Indo-Pak Border in the ‘Great Indian Thar Desert’ also called the ‘Ocean of Sands’ at a distance of 40 Km. Southwest of Jaisalmer City, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Attractions of Desert National Park:

It was established in the year 1980 and is spread over an area of 3162 Sq.Km. with sand dunes forming less than 20 per cent of the park. It comprises of craggy rocks, lake-beds of the extinct salt lakes, inter-medial areas and fixed sand dunes. It is an excellent example of the fragile eco-system of the Thar Desert which is still rich in fauna. The flora found here mainly comprises of patches of Sewan grass and Aak shrubs with some Dhok and Palm trees, while the three lakes named Padam Talao lake, Rajbaugh lake and Milak lake are the chief sources of water for the animals and the birds residing in the area.

It is habitat to Black buck, Chameleons, Chinkara, Desert Cat, Desert Fox, Desert Gerbils, Hare, Hedgehogs, Indian Fox, Monitor Lizards, Spiny tailed Lizard, a wide variety of Snakes including the poisonous Vipers and Kraits and Wolf. This region is also home to many resident birds like Blue-Tailed and green Bee-eaters, Common and Bush Quail, Falcons, Indian Rollers, Kestrels, many species of Eagles, Partridges, Sand Grouse and Shrikes and migratory birds like Demoiselle Crane, the Great Indian Bustard and Houbara which arrive in Winter months (November to February). It also has a rare collection of the fossils of Animals and Plants said to be 180 million years old.

The Sudashri forest post is the most ideal place for watching and photographing wildlife in the Desert National Park. However, to visit this post, the prior permission is required from the Desert National Park office and the office of the District Magistrate, Jaisalmer.

This National Park is also known for its towering sand dunes, and exciting Camel and Jeep safaris. The Jeep safaris enable tourists to explore a wider area of the park in a relatively short span of time, while the tourists can enjoy the adventures of the sand dunes on the Camel safaris. The tourists can also enjoy the Wildlife by staying in Camps.
