Location of City Palace and Government Museum:
This Palace is also known as Vinay Vilas Palace and is located below the battlements of the Alwar fort, at the base of the hill in Alwar City, District Alwar, Rajasthan.
History of City Palace and Government Museum:
It was built in the 18th Century A.D. by Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh of Alwar to which many additions were made by the later rulers.
Architecture of City Palace and Government Museum:
Its design is a fine blend of the Rajput and the Mughal styles of architecture. This massive complex has huge gates and its Central Courtyard has marble pavilions set on lotus bases and walls lined with canopied balconies. The major attractions inside are a magnificent Darbar hall with richly adorned walls and ceilings and the Zenana hall. A little chamber is located near Darbar hall, whose walls are adorned with beautiful miniature paintings, but the permission of the present Maharaja of Alwar is required to visit this part of the Palace.
It now houses many Government offices at its ground floor, while the upper stories house a Government Museum established in 1940 A.D. by the then ruler of Alwar. It displays a rich collection of royal memorabilia which include :
- Many Mughal and Rajput paintings dating back to the 18th and 19th Centuries A.D.
- Many objects made from jade, ivory and silver belonging to the rulers of Alwar
- Brass and Pottery works from Bengal, Jaipur and Sri Lanka
- Some rare Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Sanskrit manuscripts
- A collection of Indian armory weapons which include swords of Sultan Muhammad Ghori, of Mughal Emperors Akbar and Aurangzeb and weapons belonging to Rajput Kings
- Musical instruments
- Stone sculptures
- A copy of Mahabharata
The entire collection of the Museum which came from the royal family includes 234 Sculptures, 11 inscriptions, 9702 Coins, 35 Metal Objects, 2565 Paintings and Manuscripts, 2270 Arms and Weapons and 1809 Objects of local Art, Crafts and Musical instruments.
Visiting Hours in City Palace and Government Museum:
The Museum remains open on all days except Fridays and Gazetted holidays from 10.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M.
