History of Shri Ekling Ji Temple:

This Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva also known by the name of Shri Ekling Ji.

It is said that the rulers of Mewar had vested the ultimate power of the rule to the powerful Lord Shiva and they themselves always ruled as representatives of the Lord. This magnificent and huge Temple was built in the 8th Century A.D. by Maharana Bappa Rawal, the King of Mewar, who was a devotee of Lord Shiva.

Architecture of Shri Ekling Ji Temple:

The Shikhar (Pinnacle) of the Temple rises to a height of 50 feet and has a circumference of 60 feet. The Sanctum Sanctorum has the four-faced idol of Shiva Lingam made of black stone. The Sanctum Sanctorum has four doors in all the four directions and the door steps are jutted with gems. The door frames of the Western and Southern gates are silver covered. A beautiful silver made image of Lord Surya jutted with stones is installed above the Western gate. The Eastern gate has stone lattices to laid the fresh air and light in the Western gate. On each gate, there is a statue of Nandi (bull) facing the idol.

Out of the Sabha Mandap (the prayer hall) towards the West, there is a big black stone statute of Nandi, behind which on a high platform, is seated another Nandi made of Ashtadhatu (eight Metals). The body of the Nandi is covered with a brass layer. On this very platform is the life-size statue of Bapa Rawal with joint hands facing the East.

A unique feature of this Temple is that it belongs to the Maharanas of Mewar who meet all the expenses and it is not a public Temple. Here the daily Pooja is performed by the Pujaries appointed by the Maharanas, who first make a declaration that they are performing the Pooja in the name of the Maharana and at the end of the Pooja, they receive the blessings of the deity for the Maharana.
