Location of Ambika Mata Temple:
This ancient Temple is also known as Jagat Temple and is situated at a distance of 50 Km Southeast of Udaipur City amidst beautiful hills in town Jagat, District Udaipur, Rajasthan.
History of Ambika Mata Temple:
This Temple is dedicated to Ambika Mata, a form of Goddess Durga. It was built in the 10th Century A.D. during the Pratihara period. It possesses various inscriptions with the oldest inscription dating back to 961 A.D. describing the repair work. It is famous for its fine sculptures and artwork and because of this Temple the Village of Jagat is commonly known as Khajuraho of Rajasthan.
Architecture of Ambika Mata Temple:
This pentagonal Temple has a high rising main Shikhar adorned with intricate motifs, a number of small Shikharas around the central one, a pillared prayer hall having beautifully engraved ceiling and decorative windows on the North and South sides edged by beautiful panels, and an artistically carved small porch in the front. The doorway that leads to the inner Temple is decorated with delicate art work. The inner Temple has the idol of Goddess Durga. The exterior walls of the Temple are ornamented with larger sculptures of Gods or Goddesses, above which are the sculptures of the celestial musicians, dancers, singers, holy sages, amorous couples and beautiful women.
Now, this Temple is preserved by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Rajasthan.
