History of Lord Devnarayan Temple:

This Temple is dedicated to Lord Devnarayan considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

It is said that Sadu Mata Gurjari was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and because of her devotion the Lord Vishnu had promised to take birth as her son, but only after the death of her husband Sawai Bhoj Bagaravat in a battle. The Sawai Bhoj Bagaravat along with his 23 brothers fought a battle against their enemy, the Rajput Rana. All the brothers including Sawai Bhoj got killed in the battle.

Sadu Mata Gurjari started meditation on the top of the Malasari hill near the battlefield. On the 11th day after the battle, Lord Vishnu, who was playing dice with King Nag Vasuki (the Lord of the underworld) rised up on a stream of water that split apart the hill on which Sadu Mata was seated. Then Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of infant Devnarayan and fell into Sadu Mata’s lap. So he appeared on the earth in 911 A.D. as the Son of Father Gurjar warrior Sawai Bhoj Bagaravat and Mother Sadu Mata Gurjari.

Because of the fear of Rajput Rana, Sadu Mata took Devnarayan to her paternal home in Malwa region, where Lord Devnarayan spent his childhood. One day Chochu Bhat, a genealogist of 24 Bagaravats visited Malwa region in search of Devnarayan and informed him about the battle fought between Bagaravats and the Rajput Rana. Then Devnarayan decided to take revenge on the Rajput Rana and proceeded towards his father’s Capital town. On the way, he married three princesses and met his four cousin brothers named Medu, Madno, Bhangi, Bhuno. All the five brothers joined hands to fight a battle against Rana. Lord Devnarayan destroyed the royal fields of Rana by releasing his herd of 900,000 cows and buffaloes.

In the battle, Devnarayan killed Rajput Rana, but soon revived him, when he saw that his cousin brother Bhuno was sad at the death of his foster father Rajput Rana. Then Lord Devnarayan gave the title of Sisodia to Rajput Rana and sent him to establish the City of Udaipur. After Lord Devnarayan took revenge on the Rana, one son (named Bila) and a daughter (named Bili) were born to Queen Pipalde, the wife of Lord Devnarayan. Bila became the first priest of the Devnarayan Temple and Lord Devnarayan finally returned in his celestial chariot to Vaikunth (the place where the almighty resides).

Architecture of Lord Devnarayan Temple:

The Temple is adorned with statues of Sawai Bhoj Bagaravat, child Devnarayan sitting in his Mother’s lap and statues of Medu Ji and Bhuno Ji (the cousins of Lord Devnarayan). It is believed that Lord Devnarayan cures diseased devotees and their animals and also provides them with wealth and children.
