The Temple was originally built in 647 A.D., it was repaired in the 11th and 12th Centuries and the present Shrine was built from 1913-1923 A.D.
Mata Shakambhari is considered an incarnation of Ishwari, the consort of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, once Demon Durgam pleased Lord Brahma through meditation and got four Vedas (the books of complete knowledge) as reward. He also got a boon that all the Yajnas offered by the people would reach him making him invincible. Thereafter, he started to torture the people and it did not rain for 100 years resulting in severe drought.
The Sages meditated upon Goddess Durga and she appeared before them. The goddess had countless eyes, giving her the name – ‘Shatakshi’. She was carrying vegetarian food for the devotees and hence was named ‘Shakambhari’ (Shaka means vegetarian food and Ambari means one who bears). The Goddess, having seen the plight of Sages, could not hold tears and it rolled down from her eyes for 9 days and nights. The tears took the form of a river, thereby ending the drought.
The Sages requested Mata Shakambhari to kill Demon Durgam and recover the Vedas. The Demon attacked the Sages who were protected by Mata. Finally Mata killed the Demon and freed the four Vedas.
