Location of Jeen Mataji Temple:

This Temple is situated at a distance of 30 Km from Sikar City and 115 Km from Jaipur City in Aravalli Hills at Jeen Mata, Tehsil Danta Ramgarh, District Sikar, Rajasthan.

History of Jeen Mataji Temple:

It is dedicated to Jeen Mata, considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga (the Goddess of Power). It is said that this Temple was built in the 8th Century A.D. The full and the real name of the deity is Jayantimata and is popular amongst devotees as the mother who fulfills whatever her children wish for.

The legend of this Temple goes back to Centuries and there is a popular belief that King Ghangh of village Ghoghu of Churu, loved and married an Apsara (nymph) on the condition that he would not visit her palace without prior information to her. King Ghangh got a son named Harsha and a daughter Jeen. Afterwards, Apsara again conceived and king Ghangh went to her palace without prior intimation and thus he violated the vow. The Apsara immediately left the king and fled away with her son Harsha. She abandoned daughter Jeen at the place where the temple stands now.

The brother Harsha loved his sister very much and he got married on the desire of her sister. But the wife of Harsha felt jealous of the love of her husband with his sister. She created misunderstanding between the two. As a result, Jeen left the place of her brother to meditate in the forests. The brother soon realized his mistake and reached for Jeen. But he could not convince her to change her mind. So Harsha also started meditating on a different mountain. With the passage of time, Jeen achieved the status of `Durga’ as her incarnation and Harsha achieved the incarnation of `Bhairon’ the helper of Lord Shiva. In time, a Chauhan ruler built a Temple at that place.

The Goddess Jeen Mata is Devi herself – the Mahishasura Mardini Durga having eight arms. The Great Saint Kapil Muni is also said to have come to this place and he generated continuous water from the mountains that created a Kund (a water pond). The Mata is bathed with this holy water of the pond. This holy water is said to cure the devotees of their all ills.

The Mugal Emperor Aurangzeb wanted to destroy this Temple of Mata. The priests invoked Mata and she let out its army of bhairons which brought the Emperor and his soldiers to their knees. The Emperor asked for forgiveness and Mata pardoned him. Then Aurangzeb donated an Akhand oil lamp (ever-glowing oil lamp)) from his Delhi palace which is still glowing in this Temple.

Architecture of Jeen Mataji Temple:

The Temple’s architecture resembles the style of architecture adopted by Pratihar and Chauhan Kings of Rajputs. There are twenty four pillars with panels of figures finely carved on them.
