Location of Khimsar Fort:
This Fort is located at a distance of 42 Km from Nagaur City on Nagaur-Jodhpur National Highway 65 on the edge of the Great Thar Desert in Village Khinvsar, District Nagaur, Rajasthan. The Khimsar Sand Dunes Village is a mere 15 minutes drive from the Fort.
History of Khimsar Fort:
Rao Karamsiji, the eighth son of Rao Jodha Ji (the founder of Jodhpur), founded the Karamsot dynasty and established his kingdom between the States of Jodhpur and Bikaner. This 500 years old magnificent Fort was built by him in 1523 A.D. Its battle scarred walls unfold hundreds of years of history when fierce battles were fought for its possession due to its strategic location.
Architecture of Khimsar Fort:
The Fort is situated in the midst of sand dunes, spreading over 11 acres of land. Its acres of lush green Gardens is a true rarity of any desert of the World. The Peacocks, Parrots, Pigeons and 46 varieties of birds welcome the visitors and add to the charm and splendor of the Fort. The pathways within the Fort Complex lead to turrets, ruins, stables, majestic towers, pillars erected in the memory of the warriors and satis and still preserved guns and cannons.
A Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located here. The 9th Century Jain Gods and Goddesses carved in sandstone, but defaced by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, are worth seeing. The ancient ruins of Fateh Mahal named after Fateh Pir Baba, a great Sufi Saint who blessed the royal family, provide an exquisite experience. The royal garage has a collection of vintage cars. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb used to stay in this Fort.
Visiting Hours in Khimsar Fort:
Now, this Fort has been converted into a Heritage Hotel and a part of it is occupied by the descendants of the royal family.
It has been awarded the ‘National Grand Heritage Award For Excellence’ which is the highest award conferred upon any heritage property by the Department of Tourism, Government of India. The handicraft products made by the rural women in a Handicraft Institute, located 1 Km from the Fort and run by the Nila Moti Trust, are sold here.
