Location of Gaumukh Temple:
This ancient Temple is situated at a distance of 6 Km from Mount Abu Bus Stand and lies very close to Shri Vashistha Ashram in District Sirohi, Rajasthan.
History & Architecture of the Temple:
It is said that once Great Sage Viswamitra had an argument with Sage Vashistha and the holy river Saraswati came to support Vashistha. Viswamitra cursed the river in anger by saying, “Your flow would always be unholy”. Then Saraswati went to all the Gods and Goddesses, but no one could help her. Finally she approached Vashistha and asked him to restore her purity. Then Sage Vashistha asked her to touch his feet and flow near his Ashram to be purified again. From that time, the river Saraswati has been continuously flowing near this Ashram. This fact has been mentioned in Mahabharata, Mahapurana etc.
A devotee king installed the Gau Mukh near this flow and also constructed a small pool. The devotees bath here and perform the Gaudan Pooja to invoke the blessing of Gaulok.
