These barren, but still beautiful, shifting sand dunes are located 45 Km West of Jaisalmer City adjacent to Village Sam in the midst of the Thar Desert, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

These Golden Sand Dunes are the most famous ones in the State of Rajasthan enchanting the visitors with their hypnotic beauty. This glorious stretch of sand dunes covers an area of 3 Km. in length, 1 Km. in width and the highest dune rises to a height of almost 1/2 Km. The entire area is without any kind of vegetation with intense swirling winds comparable to the sandstorms of the Sahara Desert. So one has to be very cautious and stay close to his/her guide while during Camel ride.
The major attractions of the place are a ride on Camel – the ship of desert in the desert sea and the performances by beautiful folk dancers and singers. This place is the second most visited place in Jaisalmer after the Jaisalmer Fort for the haunting beauty of the dunes. The best time to visit the place is from the month of October to February and that too during sunrise or sunset, while some Camel safaris spend a night here providing an opportunity to sleep out in the open facing the twinkling star-studded sky. The camping at the Sam sand dunes is nothing short of a heavenly experience.
These sand dunes really come alive in the month of February/March when a Desert festival is organized here showcasing the Rajasthani Culture. A light and sound show, performances of folk dance and music, puppet shows, camel races and many other competitions are held here.
Sam Dhani, an accommodation in the shape of a fortress provides the visitors with warm welcome, board and lodging. There is regular bus service that runs from Jaisalmer City to Village Sam and herds of camel and cows are the attractions on the way to Sam.
