Location of Lodurva Temples:

These Jain Temples are situated at a distance of 16 Km Northwest of Jaisalmer City in town Lodurva, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

History of Lodurva Temples:

Lodurva was the ancient capital of the Bhatti Rajputs and was once a flourishing city. It was attacked several times by the Afghan invaders. Sultan Muhammad Ghazni attacked it in the 11th Century A.D. while on his way to Somnath and Sultan Mohammad Ghori attacked it in the 12th Century A.D. In the year 1156 A.D., Rawal Jaisal, the ruler of Lodurva built the Jaisalmer fort and shifted his Capital to Jaisalmer. Thereafter, the town fell in ruins, but it is still famous for the remains of the ancient Jain Temples.

Architecture of Lodurva Temples:

The whole Temple Complex has an octagonal pyramidal roof and is surrounded by a fortification wall. These Temples are built of bright yellow sandstone. These masterpieces of architecture are adorned with intricate carvings and complex Jaali work and have splendid and dominating arch at the entrance. These arches are typical of the Delwara style of Temple architecture.

  • Parshvanath Temple – This Temple dedicated to the 23rd Jain Tirthankar, Lord Parshavnath is the most beautiful and is situated in the Northeast corner of the Complex. It was destroyed in 1152 A.D. and the idol of Lord Parshvanath was taken to Jaisalmer. However, it was reconstructed in 1615 A.D. by Seth Dhiru Shah and new idols, which were procured from craftsmen by giving them gold equal to the weight of the idols, were installed here. The 100 cm. high black-colored idol of Lord Parshvanath is seated in Padmasana posture. Every stone in the pillars, ceilings and summits presents a vivid view of skilled craftsmanship.
  • Rishabhdev Temple – This Temple is dedicated to Lord Rishabhdev, the 1st Jain Tirthankar and is situated in the Southwest corner of the Complex near the ruins of the Moomal Palace. It was constructed in 1479 A.D.
  • Sambhavnath Temple – This Temple is dedicated to Lord Sambhavnath, the 3rd Jain Tirthankar and is situated in the Northwest corner of the Complex.
  • Ajitnath Temple – This Temple is dedicated to Lord Ajitnath, the 2nd Jain Tirthankar and is situated in the Southeast corner of the Complex.
  • Kalpavriksha – This wish fulfilling tree was once believed to have grown inside the Temple Complex. When the tree died, it was replaced by a sculpture of the tree made of eight metals. Its copper leaves are believed to fulfill all the wishes.

This place also has the remains of a number of buildings reminding the visitors of the ancient history of the place. A large number of vibrantly colored Peacocks also visit here who attract the tourists by their dance.
