Location of Jain Temples Jaisalmer:
These exquisitely carved seven Temples are situated inside the Jaisalmer Fort in Jaisalmer City, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
History & Architecture of Jain Temples Jaisalmer:
These were built between 12th and 15th Centuries A.D. and are ornamented with intricately designed and exclusive Delwara style paintings. The art and craft of these Temples is beyond description and reminds one of Delwara, Ranakpur and Khajuraho Temples. The pillars, arched gates and paintings of dolls and dancing girls are really extraordinary. These Temples are built of yellow sandstone and are connected by a series of corridors and walkways.
- Chandraprabhu Temple – This is the first Temple one comes across in this Complex of Temples. It is dedicated to Lord Chandraprabhu, the 8th Jain Tirthankar. It was built in 1509 A.D. and is adorned with intricate sandstone sculptures in the Mandapa.
- Rishabhdev Temple – This Temple is situated to the right of the Chandraprabhu Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Rishabhdev, the 1st Jain Tirthankar. Its walls have some fine sculptures protected by glass cabinets and its pillars are elegantly sculpted with Gods and Apsaras.
- Parshvanath Temple – This is the largest and the most beautiful of all the seven Temples. It is dedicated to Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Jain Tirthankar. It has a huge and beautifully carved main gateway. It has a 105 cm. high white-colored idol of Lord Parshvanath in Padmasana posture, which was installed in 1206 A.D. and was reinstalled in 1416 A.D. when the Temple was renovated. It also has an emerald statue of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Jain Tirthankar.
- Shitalnath Temple – A door to the South side of the Parshavnath Temple leads to the small Shitalnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shitalnath, the 10th Jain Tinrthankar. It has the idol of Lord Shitalnath which is made of eight precious metals.
- Sambhavnath Temple – A door in the Northern wall of the Parshavnath Temple leads to the beautiful Sambhavnath Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Sambhavnath, the 3rd Jain Tirthankar.
- Shantinath Temple – This Temple was built in 1536 A.D. and is situated near Gyan Bhandar (the library) in the courtyard of the Fort. It is dedicated to Lord Shantinath (the 16th Jain Tirthankar). It is known for its architectural beauty, carved facade and the beautiful idol of Lord Shantinath.
- Kunthunath Temple – Steps from the Shantinath Temple lead below to the Kunthunath Temple, which was also built in 1536 A.D. It is dedicated to Lord Kunthunath, the 17th Jain Tirthankar.
These Temples are surrounded by Narrow Passages where the tourists can buy different kinds of Handicraft items and Specialities of Jaisalmer.
A Library named ‘Gyan Bhandar’ is located near Shantinath Temple. It houses a rich collection of rare books on a variety of subjects and is a center of special attraction for research workers.
