This Museum is located on the Police Lines Road near Moomal Hotel in Jaisalmer City, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

History of Government Museum Jaisalmer:

It was established in the year 1984 by the Department of Archeology and Museum with the purpose of giving an insight into the geological past of the area and highlighting the cultural traditions and the heritage of the ‘Great Indian Desert’ or the ‘Thar Desert’.

Attractions of Government Museum, Jaisalmer:

The entire collection of the Museum includes 72 Stone Sculptures collected from the earliest townships of Kiradu and Lodurva dating back to the 12th century A.D., 8 inscriptions, 65 Coins, 13 Paintings, 179 Embroidered Dresses and Handicraft items. The trophy of the State bird Godawan – the Great Indian Bustard, is the most prized possession of the Museum. It also houses various types of wood and marine fossils which include fossils buried in limestone, sandstone and shale as well as the fossils laid down in the prehistoric seas. The fossils displayed here are mainly of hard-shelled invertebrates, soft-bodied animals and early vertebrate animals. This Museum is a must visit place for those interested in studying the evolution of life on the earth.
