It is maintained by the Tourism Department of Jaisalmer. It was established in the year 1997 with the purpose of highlighting the rich cultural tradition, artistic brilliance and craftsmanship of Jaisalmer.

The Museum has a huge collection of ethnic artifacts, medieval Coins, rare fossils, various ancient Scriptures, royal age Coins, ethnic Rajasthani jewelry, textiles and handicrafts, traditional musical instruments, Utensils, weapons, arms, rare fossils and Karal (a utensil used for opium mixing). This Museum is a must visit place for art lovers and for those interested in studying the History of Jaisalmer.
