This Garden is located on Jaisalmer-Ramgarh Road at a distance of 6 Km North of Jaisalmer City, District Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

History, Architecture & Attractions of Bada Bagh:

It was established in the early 16th Century A.D. by Maharawal Jait Singh, the then ruler of Jaisalmer. He constructed a tank and a dam in 1513 A.D. measuring 1,200 feet in length and 350 feet in width. It is made of solid blocks of stone, has a five-tier drainage system and steps leading to it. A pillar named Goverdhan Stambh is located nearby on which the name of the Dam as ‘Jait Bandh’ and the name of the tank as ‘Jaitsar’ are engraved. Later on, his son Maharawal Lunakaran established this beautiful green garden after the death of his father.

Maharawal Lunakaran also built a cenotaph in the memory of his father on the top of a small hill located on the side of the tank. Later on, a number of royal cenotaphs or chhatris were built in commemoration of the erstwhile rulers of Jaisalmer and their family members. The design of these chhatris is a fine blend of the Paliwal, the Mughal and the Rajput styles of architecture. These have been built of yellow sandstone in a set pattern, but differ in size.

The chhatri of Maharawal is larger in size as compared to his brothers and other members of his family. Each chhatri has a domed roof, a carved image of its occupant and preserves an inscribed tablet recording their death. The oldest chhatri is of Maharawal Jait Singh and that of his predecessor Devidas who ruled from 1470 to 1506 A.D. The newest chhatri is of Maharawal Jawahar Singh who was the ruler of Jaisalmer at the time of India’s independence in 1947. It has been left incomplete because of the untimely death of his son after which the practice of constructing chhatris was abandoned.
