Location of Bhatner Fort:
This ancient Fort is situated at a distance of 5 Km from Hanumangarh Junction Railway Station on the banks of River Ghaggar at the centre of Hanumangarh City, District Hanumangarh, Rajasthan.
History of Bhatner Fort:
It is one of the oldest Forts in India, believed to be more than 1700 years old. Once Hanumangarh was ruled by Bhatti Rajputs and hence was known as ‘Bhatner’. The Fort was built in the year 295 A.D. by Bhupat, son of King Bhatti of Jaisalmer. It was captured by many rulers including Ghaznavis, Timur, Prithvi Raj Chouhan, Qutub-ud-din-Aybak, Akbar and Rathores. The famous Battle of Tarain between Prithvi Raj Chouhan and Mohhamad Ghori was fought in the Talwara Jheel area of the District.
Timur in his biography ‘Tuzuk-E-Teymoory’ has written that it is a strongly built and secure Fort in Hindustan (India). The description of this Fort can also be found in ‘Aaine-Akbari’ written by Mughal Emperor Akbar. In the year 1805, Raja Surat Singh of Bikaner captured Bhatner after defeating Bhattis and as the day of his victory was Tuesday (known as the day of Lord ‘Hanuman’), he named Bhatner as Hanumangarh.
Architecture of Bhatner Fort:
It is located on the ancient route of invasion from Central Asia to India and was regarded as one of the most important strongholds of the Country. It stands on a moderately elevated land, has huge and strong rampart walls with massive rounded bastions at intervals and many imposing gates. It has 52 Kunds for storage of rain water which was enough for a large garrison for one year.
The Fort has numerous Temples including those of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva. An old building named ‘Jain Pasara’ and 3 antique statues bearing inscriptions are located inside the Fort. It also has a tomb of Sher Khan, the Governor of the Fort and nephew of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Balban (1266-1290).
