This Temple is named after King Machchhkund, the 24th King of Suryavanshi dynasty who is said to have reigned 19 generations before Lord Rama.

King Machchhkund was very powerful ruler known to possess supernatural powers gained through meditation. It so happened that a war erupted between Devtas and demons. King Machchhkund fought on the behalf of Devtas and helped them to win the war. The King of Devtas, Devta Indra was very pleased and he asked Machchhkund for a boon. King Machchhkund said that he was very tired and he wanted to sleep. Devta Indra gave him a boon that if anyone would wake him up, he would be burnt to ashes.

Years later during Mahabharata Period, a demon named Kaal Yaman who had got a blessing that he cannot be killed with any weapon, fought against Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna came to the place where Machchhkund was sleeping and placed his cloth on him. Kaal Yaman who was following Lord Krishna, reached the place and thinking that Lord Krishna was sleeping, accidentally woke up Machchhkund. Soon the demon was burnt to ashes due to angry gaze of Machchhkund. Thus, everyone was relieved of the sufferings. Lord Krishna asked Machchhkund to meditate for some time to achieve liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

The place has a large holy tank surrounded by many small Temples built by Pal Kings between 775-915 A.D. It is believed that by having a bath in this holy tank, everyone gets blessed.
