These are six Jain Temples situated inside the Chittorgarh Fort in Chittorgarh City, District Chittorgarh, Rajasthan.
History & Architecture of Jain Temples Chittorgarh:
These Temples were built at different times by the Fort’s Jain population who worked as the accountants to the rulers.
- The Temple of Lord Mahavir (the 24th Jain Tirthankar) was built in 1110 A.D. It is situated in Rampol which is located in the inner part of the Fort.
- The Temple of Lord Shantinath (the 16th Jain Tirthankar) is situated in Rampol which is located in the inner part of the Fort. It is also known as Shringar Chauri Temple. It is small in size, but displays artistic skills of a high quality. It was built in the 12th Century A.D. by a Jain who worked as a treasurer during the reign of Maharana Kumbha. Its outer walls are adorned with rock cuts and sculptures of dancing girls. In the year 1448 A.D., It was renovated by Shri Vela, the treasurer of Maharana Kumbha.
- The Temple of Lord Parshavnath (the 23rd Jain Tirthankar) was built in 1265 A.D. by Jaytalladevi, the wife of Maharana Tejsingh and the mother of Prince Samar Singh.
- The Bavan Jinalaya of Lord Adinath (the 1st Jain Tirthankar) – It is the largest of all the Jain Temples situated inside the Fort. The place of this Temple is known as ‘Sattavish devri’ which means that at some time in the past, there were 27 Temples here. In the year 1278 A.D., Prince Amar Singh hoisted the flag on this Temple. Two Temples dedicated to Lord Parshavnath are situated in the same campus.
- The Chaumukh Ji Temple – It is dedicated to Lord Parshavnath and is situated near the Gaumukh Kund.
- The Kirtistambha – It is a seven storied tower which was built in the 12th Century A.D. in commemoration of Lord Adinath (the 1st Jain Tirthankar). It rises to a height of 22 meters, has a cramped stairway of 52 steps, is 30 feet at the base and narrows down to 15 feet at the top. It is adorned with Jain sculptures on the outside and has a beautiful five feet high idol of Lord Adinath. The lowest floor of the tower has figures of the various Jain Tirthankars installed in special niches built to house them.
