Ganga Bai Ki Chhatri

Location & History of Ganga Bai Ki Chhatri.

Location:

This cenotaph is located at a distance of 46 Km Southwest of Bhilwara City in town Gangapur which is the headquarter of Tehsil Sahada, District Bhilwara, Rajasthan.

History:

It was built in the memory of Shrimati Gangabai, the widow of Shri Gopal Ram, who had committed sati (self immolation) in 1387 A.D.

According to historical evidence, an ancient name of Gangapur was Lalpura. Gangapur is named after the death of Maharani Ganga Bai Scindia. A very beautiful temple with great architecture is situated here called “Temple of Maharani Ganga Bai Sahib.” Maharani came here to solve a dispute between her brother [not real] Maharana Mewar and Devgarh Rao. After the settlement of the conflict, she was going back to Gwalior in the way she died at village LALPURA. Maharana Mewar gifted Lalpura & 12 other villages of Mewar to Gwalior state in memory of Gangabai. Gwalior state built a temple here & gave the new name “GANGAPUR” to village Lal Pura.
