Location of Mahi Dam:
This Dam is located on Banswara-Jaipur Road at a distance of 16 Km from Banswara City, District Banswara, Rajasthan.
History of the Dam:
This Dam was constructed as a part of the Mahi Bajaj Sagar Project under which various dams and canals were built on the Mahi river. The foundation stone of this multipurpose inter-state project was laid in 1960 by late Shri Morrarji Desai, the then Finance Minister, Government of India. It was dedicated to the Nation by the Hon’ble Prime Minister late Smt. Indira Gandhi on 1.11.1983.
Architecture of the Dam:
It has a catchment area of 6148 Sq. Km. major part of which lies in Madhya Pradesh State, water spread area of 138 Sq. Km., gross capacity of 77 TMC and 16 crest gates. It is located amidst beautiful surroundings. This dam has resulted in the formation of a number of islands inside the catchment area, hence Banswara is also known as the ‘City of Hundred Islands’.
