Location of Arthuna Complex of Ancient Temples:
This Complex of ancient Shaivite and Jain Temples is situated at a distance of 55 Km from Banswara City in Village Arthuna of Tehsil Garhi, District Banswara, Rajasthan. One has to reach Garhi tehsil which is on the Banswara-Dungarpur Road and then take a left turn from the main road via Bori-Aajna to reach the Temple Complex.
History of Arthuna Complex of Ancient Temples:
This Complex of Temples has great archaeological importance and is one of the most visited places in Banswara District. These Temples were built between 11th and 12th Century A.D. Arthuna was once the Capital of the Parmar rulers and was known as ‘Amaravati’. The excavated Temples reveal the craftsmanship of the artisans of that era. The outer walls of the Temples have elegant images of intricately sculpted figures of women in different poses.
Architecture of Arthuna Complex of Ancient Temples:
The Shaivite Temples known as Nilkanth Mahadev Temples are situated near adjoining Lankiya Village. These are old stone Temples having beautiful intricate carvings and sculpted figures of women on the outer walls. A beautifully carved conjugated statue of Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati and Lord Ganesha found here is a masterpiece. Another statue of Lord Hanuman Ji is in an unusual posture.
An old Digamber Jain Temple exists on a beautiful Hill, about one kilometer South of village Arthuna. It has 49 idols in Padmasana and Khadgasana posture. These have been carved on stone and belong to 1043 – 1143 A.D. as per the inscriptions on the idols. The Temple remains open on all days from 6.00 A.M. to 8.00 P.M. This place has very ancient history and is under the control of the Archaeological Department.
One more ancient Jain Temple is situated at the centre of Village Arthuna. It has an idol of Lord Chandraprabhu Ji, the 8th Tirthankar of Jains.
