It is believed that the original Temple was constructed in the 12th Century A.D. by King Ana Ji Chauhan (1130-1150 A.D.), the grandfather of King Prithviraj Chauhan. It was destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and was reconstructed in 1727 A.D. by Raja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur.
According to Hindu mythology, a demon named Hirnayaksh pleased Lord Brahma by his meditation and got boon from him. He then started to terrorize the people by killing anyone who performed Yajna or who worshiped God. He dragged the Earth into the depths of the sea. The Temple built in the honour of Lord Varah is ornamented with elegant carvings and sculptures and has a richly adorned image house. A life-size idol of Lord Varah having the head of a wild boar and the body of a man is installed inside the Temple.
