Location of Taragarh Fort Ajmer:
This massive Fort is located on the Top of the Taragarh Hill overlooking the Ajmer City, District Ajmer, Rajasthan. It provides a panoramic view of the City.
History of Taragarh Fort Ajmer:
It was the first Fort built on a hill in India and was earlier known as ‘Ajameru Doorag’. It was built by King Ajaypal Chauhan, a Chauhan dynasty ruler and the founder of the Ajmer City. He also founded the Village of Ajaisar located to the South of the Foy Sagar Lake. This Fort built up of stone is witness to many historic battles and very long sieges and has been occupied at different times by the Rajputs, Sultan Mohammad Ghori of Ghazni, the Sultans of Delhi, the Mughals, the Marathas and the British. When the British captured the Fort, it was dismantled by order of Lord William Bentinck and was converted into a Sanatorium for the soldiers stationed at the British Cantonment town of Nasirabad.
Architecture of Taragarh Fort Ajmer:
Its crenelated rampart walls are 3 Km in circumference and it is approachable by walking up very steep and roughly paved slopes. It has six gates and the Dargah of Hazrat Miran Syed Hussain Asghar Khangswar who was made the Governor of Ajmer by Sultan Mohammad Ghori of Ghazni when he defeated King Prithviraj Chauhan of Delhi and Ajmer in the 2nd battle of Tarain in 1192 A.D. This Dargah is situated at the highest point of the Fort. Upon the death of Sultan Qutb-ud-din-Aiybak (the commander of Mohammad Ghori’s forces and later on the founder of the Slave dynasty in Delhi), the Rathore and the Chauhan Rajputs attacked the Taragarh Fort in the night when most of the men of Miran Syed were out of the Fort. The Rajputs then massacred Miran Syed and all those present inside the Fort. Hence, the Dargah was constructed in Miran Saheb’s memory.
