This Private College is one of the oldest and the best boarding schools in the Country and is located in Ajmer City, District Ajmer, Rajasthan.

History of Mayo College:

The idea for starting the College was given on 28th May, 1869 by Colonel Walter in his Bharatpur Agency Report. It was founded in 1872 A.D. by Richard Southwell Brouke, the Earl of Mayo and the Viceroy of India (Lord Mayo) from 1869-1872 A.D. It was established with the idea of providing British standard education to the royal Princes and nobles of India. It was named the ‘Eton of India’ since its founding. The H.H. Maharaja Mangal Singh of Alwar was the first student of the College who joined it on 23 October, 1875.

Architecture of Mayo College:

Different Engineers were invited by the Viceroy to submit their designs of the building. The Grecian, Indo-Saracenic and Kolhapur styles were submitted by them. The Indo-Saracenic design made by Major Mant was finally selected in June 1875 A.D. The construction began in 1877 A.D. and it was completed in 1885 A.D. at a cost of Rs. 3.28 lakhs. Major Mant’s design is quoted in architectural courses even today and the original design now lies in the archives of the British Museum in London.

The college has a large museum containing items related to diverse areas of learning and knowledge. It also houses priceless antiques and an armoury section. It is reputed to be one of the best museums any college in the world can have. It is a rich resource centre which adds a new and unique dimension to learning. Presently, it is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.
