Location of Kishangarh Fort:
This Fort is also known as the Roopangarh Fort and is located at a distance of 27 Km from Ajmer City in town Kishangarh, District Ajmer, Rajasthan.
History of Kishangarh Fort:
This huge Fort was built in 1653 A.D. by Maharaja Roop Singh of Kishagarh State (Kishangarh State was established in 1611 A.D. by Kishan Singh, a Prince of Jodhpur State and who got it recognized by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir). It is said that Maharaja Roop Singh once saw a Sheep protecting its lambs from some Wolves and hence, he was inspired to build a strong Fort to protect his empire. It remained unconquered despite many attacks to capture it.
Architecture of Kishangarh Fort:
Its architecture is a fine blend of the Rajput and Mughal styles. Its massive rampart walls, bearing nine turrets, are surrounded by a deep moat which used to be filled with water as a first line of defense against the invaders. It encloses many courtyards like armories, jails, granaries & foundries and magnificent quarters that are adorned with beautiful fountains. The double-storeyed Darbar hall has latticed windows on the upper storey for the royal ladies to view the proceedings below.
The interiors of the Fort are ornamented with beautiful murals, miniature paintings and exquisite carvings on its walls and the ceilings and give an idea of the lavish lifestyle of the erstwhile rulers. It also became the principal centre from where the rulers patronized the Kishangarh School of miniature paintings. The World famous Bani Thani style of Painting started from here during the rule of Maharaja Sawant Singh (1699-1764 A.D.) and the court singer and poet named Bani Thani was portrayed as Radha by the painters of that period.
The town of Kishangarh is believed to be the only place in the World having a NavGrah Temple dedicated to nine Planets. It is also famous for its miniature paintings Worldwide.
