Location of Apteshwar Temple:

This ancient Cave Temple is situated at a distance of 11 Km Northwest of Ajmer City near the Brahma Temple in the Sacred town Pushkar, District Ajmer, Rajasthan. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

History of Apteshwar Temple:

This Temple is situated in a cave located next to the Brahma Temple and was built by Lord Brahma himself. It is said that when Lord Brahma performed Yajna at the Pushkar Lake, Lord Shiva came to attend the Yajna in the guise of a Tantric holding a skull in his hand. He was questioned for his such appearance, so he filled the entire area with skulls. Then Lord Brahma with the help of his divine powers came to know that the Tantric was none other than Lord Shiva. So he requested Lord Shiva to attend the Yajna. Lord Shiva attented the Yajna holding a skull in his hand and Lord Brahma built this Shrine in the honour of Lord Shiva.

Architecture of the Temple:

The present structure was built in the 12th Century A.D. A large Shiva Linga encircled by a snake made of copper is installed here.
