Location of Ana Sagar Lake:
This man made Lake is located in Ajmer City, District Ajmer, Rajasthan.
History & Architecture of Ana Sagar Lake:
This Lake which is spread over 13 Km. was constructed by putting a Dam across the Luni river by King Ana Ji Chauhan (1130-1150 A.D.), the ruler of Ajmer and the grandfather of King Prithviraj Chauhan. The lake’s embankment is built between two hillocks – Bajrang Garh and Khobra Bherun (located on the Southern side of the Lake) that have Hindu temples of the same names built on them.
The Great Sufi Saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti had stayed on the banks of this lake upon his arrival in Ajmer in 1192 A.D. The place of his stay is situated on the top of the Ana Sagar Ghati and is known as ‘Chilla Khwaja Sahib’. Later on, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir built Daulat Bagh Gardens (now considered to be the lungs of the Ajmer City) on the banks of the Lake and the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built five beautiful Pavilions of polished marble (known as Baradaris) in 1637 A.D. to further enhance the beauty of the Lake and to facilitate his long stays in Ajmer.
There is an island in the centre of the Lake having a Cafeteria, which is approachable by a boat or water scooter which are available on rent near the Eastern side of the Daulat Bagh. The best time to visit the Lake is during Winters (October to March) when it is completely filled with water. A lot of migratory birds including Pelicans, Flamingos and numerous varieties of Ducks visit the Lake during Winters. It gets dry during Summers.
A Circuit house which used to be the British Residency is located on a hill near the Lake.
