Location of Udai Sagar Lake:

This picturesque lake is located at a distance of 15 Km East of Udaipur City near Village Bichari, District Udaipur, Rajasthan. It can be reached either by taking local buses, Tongas, auto-rickshaws or taxis from the City.

History of Udai Sagar Lake:

The construction of this lake was started in 1559 A.D. by Maharana Udai Singh II and it got completed in 1565 A.D. This lake was formed when a masonary dam was constructed on river Berach to supply water to the newly founded Udaipur City. It has been named after Maharana Udai Singh, the founder of the City of Udaipur.

Architecture of Udai Sagar Lake:

This Lake has a water spread area of 5.20 Sq. Km. when filled to its gross capacity of 31.15 million cubic meters and the free catchment area of this lake is 19684 hectares. The length and the width of the lake are 4.2 Km and 2.75 km respectively, while its maximum depth is 9 meters which lies at the dam site.

The main source of water for the lake is river Ahar, a tributary of the river Berach, which passes through Udaipur City and joins the Udai Sagar lake near Village Sukha Naka. Besides this, many small seasonal rivers and streams arising from the surrounding hills also supply water to the lake. The Lake is surrounded by hills of Aravalli ranges.

The bottom of this shallow lake is silty because of the continuous sedimentation during the last around 400 years. A major part of its water is used for irrigation and for industrial needs of M/s Hindustan Zinc Ltd.
