Location of Jag Mandir Palace:
This Palace is located on the Southern island of Lake Pichhola in Udaipur City, District Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is approachable by a boat ride through Lake Pichhola from the Bansi Ghat jetty located on the main land near City Palace.
History of Jag Mandir Palace:
Its construction was started in the early 17th Century A.D. by Maharana Karan Singh II (the ruler of Udaipur from 1620 to 1628 A.D.). In the year 1623 A.D., it served the purpose of a hiding place for prince Khurram (later on the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan) who had revolted against his father, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Prince Khurram stayed here along with his wife, Mumtaz Mahal and two sons. The Palace was completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I during his reign from 1628-1652 A.D. During the First War of India’s Independence in 1857 A.D., Maharana Swaroop Singh of Mewar (1842-1861 A.D.) provided shelter to many European families in this Palace. This Palace was used by the royal family of Mewar as a Summer resort and as a place for holding parties.
Architecture of Jag Mandir Palace:
This three-storied Palace is built of yellow sandstone and marble and looks like a floating jewel when illuminated. It has a number of Palaces located inside it like :
- Gol Mahal – It is the place where Prince Khurram had stayed along with his family in 1623 A.D. and was inspired to build the Taj Mahal in Agra. It is made in the Mughal style of architecture, is adorned with the Muslim crescent, has splendid interiors and a magnificent courtyard furnished with black and white tiles.
- Bara Pathron Ka Mahal – It is made out of 12 huge and solid marble slabs.
- Kunwar Pada Ka Mahal – It was built for the crowned Prince.
- Zenana Mahal – It has several chambers where the royal ladies resided.
- Darikhana – It is an open sided terrace built with marble columns.
- Entry Pavilion – It is an impressive white colonnade of cusped arches having a landing jetty for docking of boats arriving from the main land. It is ornamented with huge life-sized elephants carved in stone, four on each side of the entry steps.
- Jagriti – It is a Heritage Museum showcasing how Jagmandir Island Palace was built and developed over the Centuries.
This Palace also has beautiful gardens adorned with roses, Jasmine flowers, Bougainvillea, Palm trees, Yew bushes, Plumeria trees, fountains and water pools crisscrossed by walkways.

Now, this Palace has been converted into a Heritage Hotel and is being managed by the HRH Group of Hotels.
