Location of Sajjangarh Palace:

This palace is also known as the Monsoon Palace and is located at a distance of 5 Km West of Udaipur City on the top of the Bansdara Hill of Aravalli ranges, overlooking the Udaipur City in District Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is approachable via a winding road which leads up the hill to the Palace.

History of Sajjangarh Palace:

It was built in 1884 A.D. by Maharana Sajjan Singh (the ruler of Udaipur from 1874-1884 A.D.). Originally, it was planned as a 9-storied structure to house a Solar Observatory and to have a look at the movement of the monsoon clouds. But due to the premature death of the Maharana, the plan was cancelled and the structure was abandoned. Later on, it was used as a Monsoon Palace and Hunting Lodge.

Earlier, it was occupied by the royal family of Udaipur, but now it is under the control of the Forest Department, Government of Rajasthan and has been opened for tourists.

Architecture of Sajjangarh Palace:

This Palace is built of white marble. It rises to a height of 3100 feet above sea level and 1100 feet over the Lake Pichhola. It has a huge central courtyard with a staircase, many rooms, quarters, high turrets, beautiful domes, fountains and exquisite jharokhas. The marble pillars on which the Palace is built, are adorned with carvings of motifs of flowers and leaves. The walls are plastered by lime mortar. It also has a unique water harvesting system to store more than 1.90 lac liters of water.

Attractions of Sajjangarh Palace:

It provides a magnificent view of the City, its lakes and the surrounding Aravalli hill ranges. The view of Sunrise and Sunset attracts a large number of visitors to the Bansdara Hill. The Palace is illuminated in the evenings.
