Location of Jaisamand Lake:

This enchantingly beautiful lake is also known as Jaisamudra Lake or Dhebar Lake. It is located at a distance of 50 Km Southeast of Udaipur City, District Udaipur, Rajasthan. It can be reached either by taking local buses, Tongas, auto-rickshaws or taxis from the City.

History of Jaisamand Lake:

Literally, Jaisamand means the ‘Ocean of Victory’ (Jai means Victory and mand means Ocean). The construction of this lake was started in 1685 A.D. by Maharana Jai Singh (the ruler of Udaipur from 1680 to 1698 A.D.) to meet the demand of water for cultivation in the area and it got completed in 1691 A.D.

This Lake is renowned for being the second largest artificial lake in Asia. The lake remained the largest artificial lake in the World till the building of the Aswan Dam in Egypt.

Architecture of Jaisamand Lake:

This lake was formed when a huge dam was constructed on the Gomti river and a massive embankment was built. The dam is 1202 feet long, 116 feet high and 70 feet broad at the base. There are six exquisite cenotaphs built in white marble and a Shiva Temple in the centre at the dam.

This lake is spread over an area of 36 Sq. miles, is 9 miles in breadth, has a maximum depth of 102 feet and a circumference of 30 miles with marble staircases leading into the water. The Summer Palaces of the Queens of Udaipur surround the lake on all sides. The Northern end of the lake has a Palace with a courtyard, its Southern end has a beautiful Baradari (a Pavilion with 12 pillars), while towards the South there are hills having grand Palaces on the top that provide an excellent view of the lake.

Attractions of Jaisamand Lake:

There are seven islands of different sizes in this lake, out of which some are inhabited by the tribe of Bhil Minas. The two bigger islands are known as ‘Baba ka Magra’ and a smaller is called ‘Piari’. The island which is spread in an area of 40 acres has Jaisamand Island Resort, a Luxury Hotel which is approachable via a 4 Km boat ride starting from the dam site. The tourists can enjoy a boat ride in the waters of this lake or opt for fishing on the banks of it. They can also go to the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary located nearby or go for bird watching while boating around the lake.
